Watt’s Up With Energy-Saving Light Bulbs?

LED Lights (LEDs)

The new kid on the lighting block, light-emitting diode lamps, or LEDs, are expected to be the gold standard of lighting for the next decade or so. They consume roughly 75% less energy than incandescents, they can last for over 20 years, they run cooler than even fluorescents, and they light up immediately (not always the case with CFLs). One little catch -- many LEDs are built into the light fixture, so you buy the LED light and the fixture at the same time. Organic LED lights, or OLEDs, are used in computer screens and other tech devices. They’re still in the development phase for consumer lighting, but OLEDs as well as LEDs may make an appearance at your local hardware store in the near future.
