The Bottom Line

There's no denying that this product is a step in the right direction for the mainstream consumer. There are greener choices out there, but none so widely available as Clorox Green Works. That said, the pros of this product do outweigh the cons for me, and I'd recommend this product to anyone.

  • Fresh citrus scent
  • Cleans comparably to conventional products

Cons

  • Not a disinfectant
  • Company as a whole is not green

Description

  • Bottle is 24 ounces
  • Angled neck with child-proof cap
  • Available in many national stores like Safeway and Walmart
  • Purchase price is typically between $3.00 and $5.00

Guide Review - Clorox Green Works Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Like all Clorox Green Works products, the Green Works Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner claims to be made of 99% natural materials. According to the Green Works website, Clorox is operating under the following definition of natural:

Natural Ingredients:The ingredients must come from renewable resources, be biodegradable and free of petrochemicals.

My Take:

Their definition certainly doesn't sound bad, and that's great considering 99% of the ingredients are natural. The other 1%, however, is not, and that 1% allows for ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate and lauramine oxide to be present as well.

Even with the addition of such non-natural ingredients, this Green Works product is not able to call itself a disinfectant. To be a disinfectant, a product must be capable of removing 100% of bacteria, viruses and fungi, and this product isn't quite there. The Green Works Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner is instead considered a sanitizer, though it still is a very effective cleaner.

Why it's Good:

Even though this product leaves some things to be desired, it does, in fact, work remarkably well. The toilet bowl gel is naturally thickened and appears to work as well as any conventional toilet bowl cleaner. It also has a light, fresh citrus scent that leaves the bathroom smelling clean after use.

This product is not tested on animals, and does not contain bleach. The natural cleaners are listed as follows:

  • Citric acid
  • Lactic acid
  • Coconut-based cleaning agent (nonionic surfactant)
  • Essential lemon oil
  • Filtered water
  • Natural thickener

Additionally, the following disclaimer can be found on the Clorox Green Works website:

Green Works products contain biodegradable ingredients: nonionic surfactant and ethanol. Contains no phosphorus. Contains no bleach.
