Step by Step: Conserve Water With Every Flush

You’re pretty much done at this point. Once you’re sure your toilet is working properly with your water-filled container in place you can re-cover the tank with its lid.

To test your toilet with this method, you’ll want to see if your toilet stays clean after a full day or two of typical use. If you notice that you or other family members have to flush more than once, your toilet is probably better off without the displacer; it takes more water to flush twice than for your toilet to operate without the displacement container.

If necessary, remove the displacer, and rest easy now that you’ve checked your toilet’s efficiency. If the displacement method works well for your toilet, however, give yourself a pat on the back for finding a way to conserve water with every flush.
