Natural Dishwasher Detergent Recipe

By Marc Lallanilla, About.com

Dishwashers are a primary use of energy and water in the kitchen. This recipe will scrub your dishes until they're clean, and keeps toxic chemicals from harming you or the environment.

Ingredients:

  • 1 C Baking Soda
  • 1C Borax
  • 1/2 C Salt
  • 1/4 C Citric Acid Powder
  • Citrus Essential Oils

Preparation:

Mix all ingredients together and add 20 to 30 drops citrus essential oil to your preference. Use one to two tablespoons of detergent per load of dishes, depending on water hardness.

Mixture should be stored in an air-tight container that is labeled and kept out of children's reach. If powder clumps, add a desiccant to remove moisture. Shake well before each use.

Note: Use vinegar as a rinsing agent for cleaner, spot free dishes.
