Turn Off the Power

Now comes a very important safety step: turning off the power to your existing thermostat. Most houses these days have a breaker switch panel, as shown. (Older homes may have a fuse box -- unscrewing the fuse is the same as flipping a breaker switch.) If your breaker switches or fuses aren't marked, you’ll have to figure out which one controls your thermostat through trial-and-error by turning on your heater or AC with the thermostat, then figuring out which breaker or fuse shuts it off. It's a slight hassle, but don't skip this step. (And maybe now is a good time to accurately label those breakers and fuses, eh?)
