Humans are a reactive species. As I've noted before, we wait until after a catastrophe to take preventative measures, instead of being proactive and avoiding disaster.
Well, a catastrophe has struck once again, and for the first time in years it seems, we're talking about climate change. The issue was largely absent from this year's political agenda, but now, like Hurricane Sandy, it's come roaring back.
What's remarkable this time is that people who normally shy away from blaming extreme weather events on climate change are now saying that yes, global warming created the superstorm we know as Sandy.
"Part of learning from this is the recognition that climate change is a reality, extreme weather is a reality," said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in a series of articles from BusinessWeek.
Insurance companies, major corporations, government leaders and average citizens are (finally) waking up to the reality that, as BusinessWeek clarified bluntly: It's Global Warming, Stupid.
