"Winter is coming," as the Stark family warns on the television series Game of Thrones. For those of us in northern climes, that warning usually means higher heating bills. The sad fact is, most American homes have poorly insulated walls, floors and ceilings with R-values (a.k.a. thermal resistance values) that are dreadfully low.

But you can push back, even if you're not a medieval baron. Get to know the R-value of your home's insulation and other building materials, and you may be pleasantly surprised to find that adding more insulation can pay for itself in just a few years.
