An alcoholic ship captain, an overworked crew, and 53 million gallons of crude oil -- those were the ingredients in the disaster now known as the Exxon Valdez spill, one of the worst oil spills in U.S history.
But as nightmarish as this oil spill was, it was actually a moderate-sized spill. Humans, apparently, are capable of even worse man-made disasters.
