This Little Piggy Took Drugs

By , About.com GuideSeptember 19, 2012

As people question what's in their food -- and why -- some disturbing answers are coming to light.

antibiotics

"Eighty percent of the antibiotics sold in the United States goes to chicken, pigs, cows and other animals that people eat, yet producers of meat and poultry are not required to report how they use the drugs -- which ones, on what types of animal, and in what quantities," according to a recent report in The New York Times.

Reckless use of antibiotics can give rise to the drug-resistant "superbugs" that are the stuff of doctors' nightmares. And since nobody's keeping track of drug use in agriculture, we're not merely vulnerable to a public health catastrophe -- we're practically begging for one.
