If you're like most people, the sight of old plastic bags stuck against fences, hanging in trees or littering sidewalks is enough to make you ... want to raise taxes?
Perhaps not, but a tax on plastic bags in Wales has slashed their use by a whopping 96 percent. And since the taxes are used to fund charities, hundreds of thousands of pounds have been raised to support good works throughout the region.
Could a tax on plastic bags be in the works all over Great Britain or -- dare we hope -- the United States? Not soon, but near-universal support for the Welsh bag tax and its success at reducing the blight of plastic bags in the landscape mean a bag tax could be coming to your town someday.
