...and it gets 30 mpg on the highway.
For the ultimate in alternative transportation, the Terrafugia Transition lets you cruise the highway at respectable speeds, then -- if the traffic gets a little congested -- take off into the wild blue yonder.
The FAA recently granted the James Bond-ian vehicle a light sport aircraft exemption, meaning you can fly one with just 20 hours of flying time.
Its speed in the air is 115 mph with a range of 460 miles, it requires only a 1,700-foot (one-third of a mile) runway to take off, and can fit in a standard garage.
The green angle on this winged wonder is that it gets better gas mileage than many boring, ordinary vehicles that don't fly. Proof that technology, despite all its hubris, shortcomings and flat-out disasters, can still do great things. (And it's a steal at only $194,000!)
