From Zero to Sexy in 5 Seconds

Here's a fun way to go green: California-based Zero Motorcycles is now marketing the Zero S, a street-legal electric motorcycle that costs about one penny per mile to ride, gets 50 miles per recharge, and zips from zero to 60 in just five seconds -- that's five totally silent seconds (no engine = no noise).

It's also a sexy-looking piece of engineering, with an aircraft-grade aluminum alloy frame and a windswept silhouette. The Zero S uses a non-toxic, lithium-ion battery array, and most of the motorcycle is fully recyclable, according to the manufacturer. Even its price tag of $9,950 comes with a 10% federal tax credit, and remember: there's no gas or oil to buy. Ever. Designed for the urban commuter, it takes about four hours to recharge on a standard household outlet.

Personally, I love the look and the idea of the Zero S, and would love to see more of them on our congested highways and streets. Maybe they're not for everyone, but how many people actually need a 2,000-pound car to get to work? Since most folks drive by themselves just a few miles to the office and to run errands, the Zero S might be the perfect solution for anyone who doesn't need to wait for an equivalent all-electric, zero-emission sedan, i.e., most commuters.
