Escalade Hybrid SUV Purchasing Price: $71k

Friday August 15, 2008

I've always had a problem with the concept of a Hybrid SUV. Really, trying for an eco-friendly SUV is about the same as effective as greening semi trucks at this point.

Still, there's no denying that calling something 'green' makes it a little more appealing to consumers - greenwashing or not.

As it happens, the newest hybrid to hit the market happens to be the Escalade Hybrid by Cadillac. The specs? You'll pay a hefty $15,000 more than the base model for this 'eco-friendly' model, putting the price tag at about $71 thousand dollars. Yeah.

And just how many more miles per gallon are you getting for the added expenditure? The average Escalade gets an EPA estimated 12/18 mpg, while the hybrid gets 20/21 mpg.

Who knows. Maybe there's someone out there that needs a vehicle that costs as much as some mortgages. Maybe that three extra miles per gallon on the highway really will make a difference. And maybe, just maybe, if someone drives the new Cadillac Escalade enough, they'll break even in Forbes' estimated three to five years.

Maybe. But I doubt it.

Are you kidding me? Seriously….. I think that the idea of the Hybrid SUV is the stupidest thing in the world. Its an oxymoron. Everyone knows that SUVs get horrible gas milleage, same as a truck, but they are meant to get horrible gas milleage. With bigger, more powerful engines, they are meant to tow stuff and get poor gas milleage. I think car companies are so stupid for thinking that a “hybrid” suv is going to all of the sudden make things better. Besides, who in their right mind would pay the extra $15,000?

I read an article the other day that talked about how “hybrid” cars, specifically SUVs, were not worth the extra money and that gas would need to be around $8-$10 per gallon for it to be worth paying that extra “$15,000″.

I understand hybrid cars like the Prius and Camry and Altima, but SUVs? Come on guys……Seriously
