Television - Upcycle the Old, and Integrate the New

Thursday July 10, 2008

With the digital revolution hitting airwaves February 17, 2009, there's probably going to be a bit more commotion in electronics superstores across the US as D-Day looms closer and closer.

All bets aside, though, there are a few things you'll want to consider before you upgrade to a newer model:

  • Is Bigger Really Better?

Really? Honestly? No. Not for the environment anyway. While a smaller screen won't get you quite close enough to compare hand size with your favorite celebrity, it will do wonders for your energy consumption and bill.

So if you're still deciding between the 36" and the 42", opt for the little guy. It'll make a bigger difference than you'd think.

  • Make it an Eco-Friendly Model.

First, do we even have to say it? Make sure your new model is Energy Star Certified. If you haven't noticed Energy Star stickers by now, it's something you might want to check out. Second, the debate between plasma and LCD TVs is on, and the argument is not pretty. LCD's, though, consume less power and are more eco-friendly.

If you're planning to totally disregard our first tip (bigger isn't better), your best option is to purchase a projection system. You'll get a high definition image, and you won't be wasting near as much energy as you would be with a Plasma.

  • Take it to the Curb, or Not.

TVs, just like any other electronics, shouldn't be deemed useless just because you're upgrading. Go curbside with your recycling, or better yet, don't.

A new service available through Zip Express Installation will come right to your living room and haul that baby off. So if you've been hesitant to go digital because you don't want to carry your old, 80lb. set down three flights of stairs, hesitate no more. These guys will do it for you!
